Jewel Shiboridashi, Sawa Hōzan
This shiboridashi is a handleless tea pot reserved for brewing gyokuro and high quality sencha teas at low temperatures. Unlike most kyusus, shiboridashi do not have strainers; instead, the artist carves small tines into the lip, which allow the tea to pour while keeping the brewed leaves in the teapot.
This teapot is crafted with a "kanyū" or crackle glaze. Over time, the minuscule crackles become more pronounced as the teapot ages with use.
Sawa Hōzan is a family-run pottery study in Shiga Prefecture that crafts Shigaraki-yaki teaware and tableware by hand, without the use of molds. Run by a father-son duo, their ceramics are appreciated by many both in Japan and around the world.
